HSH Nordbank Run

Goodgamers prove Goodrunners at the HSH Nordbank Run

Following our efforts in 2011, 2012 and 2013, Goodgame Studios recently took part in the HSH Nordbank run in the Hafencity area of Hamburg for what is now the fourth time.

Comprising 50 Goodgamers, our team was the biggest to represent our company so far. In total, there were 23,244 runners and 812 teams taking part. The proceeds of the charity run, totaling €150,000, were given to the “Kinder helfen Kindern” initiative, who will use it to fund the “Kids in die Clubs” project.

All the employees running the race were kitted out with a Goodgame sports shirt, and then it was time to tackle the four-kilometer route together. Our team got off to by far the loudest start, and the commentator was friendly enough to remark that we are always looking for new employees, and that anyone who had their application with them was welcome to give it to us.

FH Wedel

Goodgame Studios crowns programming champion from Wedel University

The Wedel University of Applied Sciences recently held their biannual programming competition, which is open to all students of the university. Goodgame Studios sponsored the event and donated prizes totaling €1000.

The task for the competition concerned artificial intelligence. Two computers had to be programmed to play the number game 2048 against each other. The program had to run on Linux. Students worked together in small groups, and the results were presented at the end to be judged. Before the ceremony, while the judges were weighing up the teams’ efforts, our Chief Technical Officer Stefan gave a short presentation about Goodgame Studios. We are always looking for well-qualified specialist staff to join our team of 200 programmers. The competition was a good opportunity to introduce ourselves as a company and to discover coding talent.

Work-football balance

Football fever has gripped the world. Of course that includes us here at Goodgame Studios.

With our colorful GGS team from 42 different countries across the world, it is all the more fun to get fired up together. For Germany’s opening match against Portugal in group G, we used our new café to screen the match. 200 Goodgamers gathered to cheer for their teams. The duel between the two favorites was hardly a close game, but this went down well with the vast majority of our audience. The event was a great inauguration for our café, which proved itself the perfect place to follow the World Cup. There was beer for all and a hot dog van right outside to provide the perfect half time snack, so that even the Portugal fans had something to be happy about.

Hackathon

24 hours of concentration and codes – the Hackathon in Hamburg

The Hackathon in Hamburg took place recently with the motto “For a better working life”, and several Goodgamers were there to test their programming skills. At such events, participants have 24 hours to work on a project together. The aim is to produce demonstrable results before the time runs out, and ideally a finished and functioning product.

In Hamburg, the 80 participants, of whom more than half were women, sat together in small groups to discuss their projects and work together on their tasks. Some opted to work on beanbags or benches in the open air – the atmosphere was relaxed and casual. The Hackathon started early on Saturday and hacking continued until Sunday afternoon. Goodgame Studios were supporting the event, and we were there running a smoothie bar where participants could pick up a free dose of vitamins.

PHP User Group

PHP user group meets at Goodgame Studios

Yesterday evening we welcomed the PHP user group to our offices for the first time. This was a chance for us to make sure we were up to date with the latest PHP technology, and to share our own knowledge with our guests. The PHP user group event takes place once a month at a different location each time, and this evening there were around 70 participants.

Before the presentations began, there was a chance for anyone who was interested to look around our premises, and several curious guests took the opportunity. The evening’s program began with a brief opening speech from our Chief Technical Officer Stefan Klemm. Then two of our PHP developers, Dennis and Christian, gave a talk on “The Goodgame Shop – how to achieve high scalability and low response times worldwide”. The Goodgame Shop processes all the payment transactions from our games. Dennis and Christian discussed how the shop has been developed so far, and what its future prospects look like. With an increasing global market share, our technological structures must be constantly adapted to new situations. One aspect of these technologies focuses on increasing the performance of websites. How this performance is measured was discussed in another talk by our colleague Lars at the Web Performance Meetup, which also took place recently at Goodgame Studios.

Goodgame Studios go political

There is no doubt that the digital economy is an important market for the future, in particular the gaming industry.

GGS alone have created more than 800 jobs in Hamburg, a trend that is set to continue upwards. We are one of the biggest employers in Hamburg, and even politicians are recognizing the importance of Goodgame Studios in driving growth. This is why we were visited last Tuesday by Olaf Scholz, First Mayor of Hamburg. He wanted to get to know the company and its founders, Dr. Kai and Dr. Christian Wawrzinek, and get a personal impression of the way we work and how we finance our growth.
